1969 - Paolo Vitelli, before taking his University degree started his own company in Turin, Italy. The purpose of the business was to charter sailing boats. Therefore he transformed his passion into a business, becoming a renowned manufacturer of luxury motor yachts.  Amerglass, a modern Dutch shipyard producing boats in fibreglass, conferred the first dealership contract in Italy on the newly-founded power boat manufacturer Azimut. The business developed quickly, adding the distribution of sailing boats, motorcruisers and finally motoryachts from different makers: British Powles,Westerly, and others.

The product of a joint-venture with Amerglass, the first fibreglass motorcruiser developed, the AZ 43 BALI, was an instant success. The range of motorcruisers extended downwards with the introduction in 1977 of the AZ 32 Targa model: soon after, a full range of successful luxury Motorcruiser and Motoryacht models came onto the market. The applied research program is one of the highpointsof the Azimut production system. 

The program makes a production yacht available for experimentation into innovative solutions and to discover whether or not they are feasible. Model K, as the test yacht is called, offers the company an opportunity to try out numerous different yacht design proposals, so contributing to the introduction of innovative solutions that improve both performance and quality of life on board. Awarded by a technical commitee consisting of the prestigious English boating magazines, Motor Boats Montly and Motor Boat & Yachting, for custom yacht category above 70 feet. Champions of Growth: awarded by Italian Industry Federation The special award for Best Performer was presented to Benetti President Paolo Vitelli by Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, President of Confindustria, thanksto a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for Benetti Group of more than 26% and a profitability higher than an average 15% per year.
